A recent survey by Thomson Reuters Foundation has cited the world’s 10 most dangerous countries for women. While India topped the chart, the U.S. also made it to the list.

It is difficult for Indian people to digest that they have defeated countries like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Syria, and Somalia, in creating an unsafe environment for their women, as females from these countries barely have the right to speak.

The U.S., on the other hand, is the only western democracy in the top ten.

A recent #MeToo movement has uncovered multiple cases of sexual harassment, and may have contributed to the rankings.

A large number of American women face sexual violence, harassment, sexual coercion, and lack of access to justice in cases of rape.

Women in India are slowly but surely making their mark in all prominent sectors of the world, yet a section of society is stuck in confining them to the boundary of the house.

Even today, the rural areas of the country follow the age-old caste system that leads to honor killing.

Despite government imposing strict laws around dowry harassment, there are various reported incidents of women being harassed by in-laws and their husbands for dowry, which often leads to suicide or murder of the newlywed girl.

Every day, Indian newspaper reports 2 to 3 cases of rapes and sexual assault, and most of the victims are minors or teenagers.

Teenage girls are often abducted by a group of men from their way to school or tuition, and are then gang-raped in a moving car or an isolated spot, and left on the road to die or is often murdered by her attackers.

Only recently a 15-year-old girl was tricked to an isolated place from a family function. There were 10 men waiting at the spot, who then took turns to rape her. In another incident, a 16-year-old girl was abducted on her way to school, then gang-raped her before leaving the victim on the road.

These are just a few of the latest indents from many reported, while many of these cases go unreported, as families believe this would outrage the girl’s modesty or no one will want to marry her.
